the games

the games have begun- we are starting day 4 now, and things are starting to settle down. it had been a rough start for the accommodations team dealing with lost luggage, under-informed volunteers, and long long hours. I tallied up my total from last week and foud that I had worked 98.5 hours. 22 of those were on the day of opening ceremony. after the athletes split into sports team in different hotels. my partner in crime christa and I spent 6 hours driving around the treasure valley tracking down lost luggage-- and we started at about midnight. while this has been taxing, it really has been fun like I expected. you don't know what things you are capable of until you push yourself.

The Rundown

I'm Jesse Bright-- graduate of DePauw University and former member of AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). I served in the Pacific Region with its headquarters in Sacramento California.

If you're new to the concept of the NCCC, here's the official take on it: "For 10 months members serve on teams to meet urgent community needs through projects that improve the environment, enhance education, increase public safety, adresss unmet human needs, and provide rapid and continuing disaster relief."

Now, I've begun serving in AmeriCorps St. Louis- Emergency Response Team. We are a group of about thirty 21-28 year-old members who respond to disasters throughout the US (wildfires, windstorms, floods, ice storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.) as well as raise funds and stay fit through conservation work (trail building, invasive species removal, creation of fire-line).

This purpose of blog has been to share my experiences throughout the my 11 month stint with those who would care to know what I'm up to without bothering with pesky mass emails. I've hoped to share a bit of my own personal growth, inform others about the good works going on in their backyard, and vent a feeling or two. I try to do so with a bit of wit and humor if I can spare it.
